La Kala: Bluebeard’s Castle Opera
Béla Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle (Herttua Siniparran Linna) is based on Charles Perrault’s 1697 story Barbe Bleu. Although composed in 1911, the opera first premiered in 1918, as Bartók composed it for an orchestra so large, that it was believed to be impossible to perform.
La Kala’s version of the opera remains faithful to the fairytale-like story of self-sacrificing love and the eternal kingdom.
La Kala Opera, based in Sumiainen, is likely the smallest opera house in Finland. The company is known for their impressive, high-quality productions.
